Did you know there’s a Kiss and Make Up day? Yeah, it’s on August 25th, and if ever there was a day to tickle the fancy of book lovers who’re into second chance romance, this is it. I enjoy writing second chance romances … and reading them!
The trope has been going strong for forever, I guess because all of us has had a relationship that once meant a lot to us, and then for some reason it didn’t end well. There’s often that small part of us that wonders what we’d do if we had the chance to try again.
Here are a few good reasons to kiss and make up with a lover:
- Taking a second chance on love gives us hope, and hope is one thing the world needs more of.
- Just as a warm coal can be coaxed back into flame faster than cold firewood, an old romance is easier to rekindle than a new relationship. There’s a spark deep inside the heart of it, waiting to be fanned into a blaze once more.
- Our relationship may be stronger. If we work at it, we can fix the issues that broke us up in the first place, and we’ll be more aware of our triggers moving forward.
- If we can be forgiven by those who we’ve hurt, then maybe we’re worthy of being happy in other areas of our lives, too.
- Fate just might be giving us a gentle reminder that this is the person we were truly meant to be with. And who are we to argue with Fate?
How can we talk about the joys of reuniting without taking a deep dive into the most divine break up/make up song tracks of all time? Here’s Peaches and Herb, singing “Reunited” … guaranteed to tug on your heartstrings. Oh, the slow dances my pre-teen self fantasized about to that tune! And if you’re too young to remember, sit back and let them make your soul weep.
Of course, this leads me to the question: How do you feel about second chances, in romance fiction and in real life? How likely are you to give a lover who has hurt you a second chance?
